BACKGROUND: The incidence of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has decreased after the introduction of JE vaccine in Korea in 1971. However, the number of JE cases has increased since 2010.
METHOD: Epidemiological investigations were performed for all reported laboratory-confirmed JE cases, and the cumulative incidence was calculated for the surveillance years 2011?2015.
RESULTS: A total of 103 JE cases were confirmed during 2011-2015. The number of deaths was 13.6% (14 cases). The median age of cases was 54.3 years (range: 38-85 years), and according to age group, 90.3% were 40 years old and above. Thirty-eight cases (38.8%) had risk factors such as travel history, outdoor activity, or with residence close to pigsty or rice paddy. On the other hand, 51.5% of the patients resided in the metropolitan areas such as Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do. Finally, eight (7.8%) patients had underlying diseases, such as diabetes (37.5%), liver failure (25.0%), etc.
